Today I want to review a one of the Christmas DVDs that is very special to me: The Nightmare Before Christmas. I saw this movie in a small theater on Christmas Day of 1994 and it blew me away. Since then I watch it almost every Christmas (and sometimes on Halloween too).

Here’s the plot: Jack the Pumpkin King gets bored with Halloween and decides to take over Christmas from Santa Claus. He makes the appointed rounds himself delivering horrible toys to less than happy kids. The problem is that the real world isn’t used to Jack’s lifestyle and it’s not going to plan for Jack at all.

For all of you that have already seen The Nightmare Before Christmas I found a nice article with some background information:

The Nightmare Before Christmas was the first full-length stop motion animation film ever produced. To give you some idea why that might be – Santa Claus had more than 50 different moving parts, Sally had 10 different interchangeable faces each with 11 different expressions and Jack had more than 400 separate interchangeable heads each handcrafted with a different facial expression. If that weren’t enough, at the height of production, it took the animators an entire week to produce only 70 seconds of film time.

Tim Burton has said he was first inspired to write the original poem the film is based on when he saw a Halloween merchandise display being removed and replaced by a Christmas setup. The juxtaposition of the dark skeletons, ghouls and goblins mixed with the bright cheery Santa and his reindeer enticed his imagination and set the wheels in motion.
